The Ellwood House was built as a private home by barbed wire entrepreneur, Isaac Ellwood, in 1879. It is located at 509 1st Street in DeKalb, Illinois. The Victorian style home designed by George Garnsey was remodeled in 1898 and 1911. After Perry Ellwood inherited the home, he remodeled the interior and exterior incorporating several architectural styles. In 1964, the house was donated to the city of DeKalb and converted into a museum and became listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
There is a really neat visitor center built in Perry’s original garage near the house and five other structures in addition to the house. A 50-foot tall water tower dominates the west side of the property.
Tours started in March and are offered of both the Ellwood Mansion and neighboring Ellwood-Nehring House. All tours start in the Visitor Center which contains four exhibit galleries which are free to the public year round. Beginning on May 21, twenty one local artists will be showing their works in the second-floor museum galleries of the Visitor Center. An opening reception will be held on the evening of May 23 at 6:30 PM which would be really fun to attend if you are into ART.
There are several levels of tours available of the mansion and most are in the afternoons. Some include just the main floor while others allow you to see all three floors of the mansion. Tickets start at $8 for adults and guided and large group tours are available. The Musuem is open Tuesday through Sunday and will be closed on Mother’s Day which is May 12.
