The Egyptian Theatre has been at the heart of entertainment in the DeKalb area since 1929. When it opened on December 10, 1929, admission to the first ever movie in the building was $0.50 for adults and $0.25 for children.
Ticket prices might have changed a little over the years, but the Egyptian Theatre still brings high-quality movies and live acts to the area. After a restoration in the 1980s and a replacement of the seats in 2011, the Egyptian Theatre has all of the beauty of a historical venue with some more modern conveniences.
Right now, the theatre is organizing a campaign to get funding to add air conditioning to the building for the very first time. This would allow the Egyptian Theatre to host concerts, movies, weddings, and other events year-round. Learn how you can help on their website.
There are so many fun events coming up at the Egyptian Theatre this spring. You can see a live performance of “The Little Mermaid,” “Cinderella,” or “The Wizard Of Oz.” Get tickets to see Scotty McCreery play live. Or check out the Dekalb School District Art Show in April.
If there isn’t an event going on that you want to see, there’s still a lot to enjoy at the Egyptian Theatre. You can schedule a theatre tour for large or small groups. Tours are $7 for adults, $3 for children ages six to 12, and free for children under six. Groups of 15 or more are discounted to $5 per person. On these walking tours of the building, your guide will give you information about the history of the theatre, the architecture, and some info on the theatre’s current operation.
If you’d like a little spookier look behind the scenes, get tickets for a flashlight tour. These tours run ffrom8 p.m. to 10 p.m. You’ll be guided by a staff member and do your exploring using only your flashlights. You’ll get details on the haunted history of the building and get to access parts of the Egyptian Theatre not usually available to the public. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.
